How to Find Open Houses Near You

The average consumer looks at up to 10 houses before deciding which one to buy. Whether you spend your time searching for homes for sale online, touring homes with a real estate agent or checking the newspaper for new listings, you should also consider getting a better look at those homes through open house events. If you're like many buyers, you might think that you'll hear about all upcoming events through your agent. While your agent is a great source of information, you can find out about open houses in other ways too.

Check the Paper
You might hear about the benefits for sellers of listing their homes online. This lets them target more people, provide prospective buyers with pictures and even videos of their homes and let those buyers know how much they want. While you should use the Internet, you should also check the local paper. Check both the primary newspaper for your city and any free papers in your city too. Those newspapers often list open houses hosted by individual sellers who want to sell their homes without going through an agency. Your agent may not even know about one of those open houses.

Search for Online Listings
There are literally hundreds of classified ad and real estate websites that now give sellers the chance to list their homes for sale online. While many sellers will use a number of different sites, some use just one or two. Searching all of the sites that you find can help you learn about homes for sale right down the street from you and homes for sale all the way across the country. Some sites will even let you sign up for a free or paid account. Once you enter the details regarding the type of house you want, these sites will email you new postings that match your wish list.

Take a Drive
If there is a specific part of the city that you want to move to, take the time to head out to that area and take a short drive. As you drive through the city, keep your eyes out for signs posted on the side of the streets and signs on electric and utility poles. Those selling their homes on their own will often use signs to alert buyers about those homes and about upcoming open houses. Check with local grocery stores and community centers for bulletin boards where sellers may post ads for their homes.

Sign Up with Agency Websites
When you have a good relationship with your real estate agent, you trust that agent to look out for your best interests and to help you find the perfect home. The problem is that some agencies only have access to homes for sale listed with sellers through that agency. Even if they get other listings, it may take weeks for those listing to show up. Signing up with multiple agencies gives you the chance to learn about open houses and homes for sale that sellers list with other local agencies.

There are multiple things you might look for at an open house, including the number of bedrooms available, the cleanliness of the home and even how those living in nearby homes act. Before you can attend a single open house though, you need to find out where those open houses take place. In addition to working with your real estate agent, find out about upcoming open houses through local newspapers, other agencies, on classified ad websites and with a drive through the area where you want to live.
