Things You Should Do When You Get the Keys To Your New Home

Things You Should Do When You Get the Keys To Your New Home

When you step into your new home, the first phase of homeownership takes place. Being ready is the best way to tackle new tasks and get settled in quickly. A to-do list is the first step in staying organized and being able to enjoy your new house.

Make a List

Add to your list all of the first-day, first-week, and first-month tasks. Your first day should include a lot of inspecting, while your first week should include unpacking and cleaning. A first-month item could be planning a housewarming party.

Start a Homeowner's Journal

This journal will include when you last inspected, cleaned and fixed items. You can also jot down repairs and keep your receipts inside the journal. This is good for reference, especially if you continue to make the same repairs. If there are many adults in the home, it is a good idea to keep the journal in a place where everyone can access it, in the case of an emergency.

Inspect Your New Home

One the first day, you should inspect your home for rodents, bugs, things that need repair and cleanliness. You may want to hire cleaners, have the floors restained, or caulk the toilets and tubs before you start moving boxes in. Check your attic and basement to make sure they are clean, secure and have no leaks or cracks.

Locate the Important Things

You should know where your electrical panel is right away. Also, your water shut off valves should be found the first day you get the keys.

It is always a good idea to change your locks and get a security system as soon as you move in. This will make you feel more secure if you don't have a keyless entry. If you can't afford an expensive security system right away, there are alarms you can attach to your door and windows that are an inexpensive alternative.

Check you Detectors

Check all of your smoke detectors and replace the batteries, so they are in good working order.

You will want to clean your dryer's lint duct, refrigerator coils and other items on appliances prior to using them.

Change your address, set up utilities and register your children for school as soon as possible. This will help make the transition to a new home smooth.

Plan a party or decorate a perfect room in your new home, to enjoy the benefits of your move. A backyard party is great if you are repairing your home as you live in it. Giving out invitations is also a great way for you and your family to meet the neighbors.

Take your to-do list with you as you walk through your home on the first day. Make a note if you need to hire professionals, so you can sit down with your budget and determine when you will hire them. There may be some overwhelm during the first few weeks of moving in, but it is all worth it in the end.
